Notes.
An air mass is basically a lot of air that has the same moisture and temperature.
- tropical latitudes- warm
- polar latitudes- cold
- over ocean > over land; has more water.
- air masses can be classified
- a front is a boundary between two different air masses
- 4 types of fronts; most classified as cold or warm
- COLD FRONTS- faster moving air, very rainy, significant difference= very large storms including tornadoes and hurricanes, higher air pressure.
- WARM FRONT- takes place when warmer air overtakes the retreating colder air, less air pressure, warm temperatures, light rain.
- STATIONARY AND OCCLUDED FRONTS- with stationary fronts, the air masses do not move, forming a boundary. with occluded fronts, a warm front is overtaken by a cold front, and there is no warm air. helps meteorologists make weather predictions.
